Wild New Guinea

New Guinea is the world's second-largest island. New Guinea is a part of oceania. New Guinea is known for its vast rainforests and exotic animals. New Guinea is about 65 percent tropical forest. New Guinea has a biodiversity between 5 and 10 percent of the total species on the planet, which is the same as that found in the U.S or Australia.

The Climate

New Guinea has a wet and dry season like many other tropical areas. But, the seasons in New Guinea could be better described as the wet season and the less wet season in most of New Guinea. Certain parts of New Guinea get over 8m of rain in a year. While most of New Guinea is wet there are also extreme opposites. In Port Moresby the capital of New Guinea on the southeast side of the island the annual rainfall is about 100mm. New Guinea also has a high humidity percent ranging from 70-90 percent.

The Indigeneous Peoples of New Guinea

There are thousands of different cultures in New Guinea, there are an estimated 800 distinct spoken native languages. The people can be divided into four ethnic groups: New Guineans (from the north of the main island), Papuans (from the south), Highlanders, and Islanders. There is, however, considerable cultural variation within each of these groups. The peoples of the south coast were notorious for headhunting and cannibalism before the arrival of the Europeans. Many people still live in small villages and follow traditional tribal customs.

The Birds of paradise

New Guinea is home to 34 of the 38 species of the birds of paradise. The birds of paradise are stunningly beautiful birds unique to New Guinea. I have a section for these birds because they are a symbol of New Guinea, the country's flag has a bird of paradise on it and the country itself is in the shape of a bird.

New Discoveries

There have been over 700 new species of animals discovered from 1998 to 2008. There are new species of animals being found everyday in the hidden dense rainforests of New Guinea. Below are pictures of the newly discovered species.
